Narrative
The original house, designed in 1965 by architect Richard Meier, has been widely published and is internationally known. Unfortunately, the Owners have grown out of the space and need an addition to the house but they do not want to change the design of the house. The family now wants an area more secluded from the rest of the house that allows the family to spend time together. They like the idea of an exercise room, because it lets the family do something together. Since they live by the Long Island Sound, they want to be able to see and admire the water, so therefore want a porch with a view of the water.
Meta Idea
Since the smith house is very close to the water, I wanted the idea of a wave crashing into the house to act as a connecting piece to the existing house.
