Project 1
Form & Function
The objective of this project is to create a functional, movable bridge that allows an object that is 30' x 40' to pass through it. In the process of designing the bridge you must incorporate concepts from everyday movable objects. When it comes to transforming the bridge you must also not try to hide the concepts, for the project calls for some sort of transformation process to occur.

My project used concepts of an adjustable wrench, an egg beater and a pulley system. I transformed an Arch Bridge to incorporate the movable parts and create a new form.
Criteria
190' span of the bridge
No piles in the water under the bridge
A vessel 30' x 40' must be able to pass through the bridge
Road must be 10' above the water
Bridge members cannot span over 20'

Preliminary Design
This is the basic 2-D design of the bridge that has now incorporated the movable concepts into the bridge.

View of Gears
The Gears move the screw system that allows the part of the bridge to move up and create a space for the object to come through.
Pulley System
The movement of the weights attached to the pulley system move the gears that then follows the movement of the screws.

Screws
The screws move the part of the bridge up and down so that opens up.
